Full-fledged settlement and advancement of Oakland took place after California was conquered by the United States at the time of the Mexican-American War, and the California Gold Rush in 1848. The first settlement in what is presently the downtown was originally referred to as "Contra Costa" and was part of Contra Costa County prior to Alameda County being founded on March 25, 1853. The town of Oakland was incorporated by the California State Legislature on May 4, 1852.
